Derby 101

Derby Basics. Roller derby is a race where players hit each other on skates! At the beginning of each Jam, one Jammer and four Blockers from each team will line up on the track. The Jammer wears a Star on their helmet and scores points for their team. They score 1 point for each opposing Blocker they lap, scoring up to 4 points in a lap! The Pivot is a Blocker who wears a stripe on their helmet. They're the only Blocker who can take the Star Cover from the Jammer mid-Jam, meaning they can start scoring points for their team. Blockers are skaters focused on playing offense for their own Jammer and defense against the opposing Jammer. They're required to stay within 10 feet of each other.

Lead Jammer. When the Jam starts, the Jammers race to pass all of the Blockers first. The Jammer who gets through first doesn't score any points on the first lap, but they are declared Lead Jammer, and can call off the Jam early by tapping their hips.
